The Autonomy Project is a campaign of the Coalition of African Lesbians — a sub-Saharan regional advocacy organisation with pan-Africanist and feminist ideals. The Autonomy Project promotes the discourse and practice of agency, autonomy, and freedom for women and marginalised and stigmatised gender nonconforming individuals and communities.
The Exploding Sexualities Project (Autonomy/ Masakhane), comes from the background of The Feminist Action Campaign (FAC) which was a campaign initiated by a feminist collective driven by rage at the violation and discrimination of women based on their real or perceived sexual expression and identity. Initially titled the more than campaign, FAC was fiercely committed to social justice and women’s sexual freedoms of autonomous choice and expression. Rejecting the over professionalization of activism and frustrated with fragmented work on sexuality with inconsistent and in some cases the complete absence of a political ideology the FAC attempted to ignite the social awareness required for a movement to emerge.
